Who's using trolley assist today?
South Africa and Namibia:
- Sishen Iron Ore — 41 units
- Grootegeluk Coal Mine — 26 units
- Palabora Mining Company — 27 units (19 in production)
- Rossing Uranium — 11 units
North America:
- Barrick Goldstrike Mines — 22 units
Trolley assist is typically used in deep pit mines with haul roads that don't move too frequently or where diesel fuel is much more expensive than electric fuel.

Why aren't more mines using trolley assist?
- Unfamiliarity:
Mines don't know enough about trolley assist and how it can increase productivity and profitability. - Perception of high capital cost and long payback period:
Increased productivity, especially from AC drive trucks, energy, and maintenance cost savings can lead to attractive payback periods of 1 to 3 years. - Perception of high maintenance costs for wayside and truck installed trolley equipment:
Original "railway" equipment has been modified and adapted for mining environment. Models for preventive maintenance are available from existing installations. - Less flexibility than normal truck operation:
True, trolley assist is not for everybody, but it should be considered for every new mine plan.
